“Sea of Buddhas”, photograph by Hiroshi Sugimoto.

In the Sanjusangendo, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, are 1,001 Senju Kanon statues, some of which date back to more than eight hundred years ago. A 19th Century photograph of some of the statues can be seen here.

It took Sugimoto seven years to secure permission to enter the “Hall of Thirty-Three Bays” where the statues are located, and take this photograph.
